Speaker of the House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara has picked a nomination form to return to the National Assembly on the platform of the opposition People’s Democratic Party, PDP, to represent his Bogoro/Dass/Tafawa Balewa federal constituency.
Addressing a crowd of his constituents who traveled from Bauchi to meet him at his Abuja residence on Tuesday, Rt. Hon Dogara Dogara said that he had planned to retire from partisan politics after serving 12 years at the House, four out of which he spent as Speaker — but their overwhelming demand forced his hands to continue his lawmaking career.
“Some people said they will retire us from politics, but we want to inform them that only God and the electorate can retire us,” Mr Dogara said.
The disclosure ends months of speculation about the Speaker’s political position as he was long connected with the Senate President Bukola Saraki in the polarization of the ruling APC. Dogara first won elections into the House of Reps on the platform of PDP in 2007 and defected to the APC in 2015.
With the development, the opposition PDP now controls both chambers of Nigeria’s National Assembly.
